#14 Library Thing

I think this is a great website. I intend to use this and hope to add its use in promoting our library and new books that come in at school. I am always looking for ways to entice students and teachers to try out the new books, and not just use the popular books or the books that have been the standbys.

I will spend more time on this site when I can. At this time, most of my extra time goes towards working on this blog:-)

#13 Productivity Tools

It was awesome to see all of these devices that one can use. I am excited to try out the Zamzar site when I can't open something at school. It doesn't happen offen but it will be good to try it when it does occassionally come up.

I looked at Pageflakes which was incredibly easy to use. I spent some time exploring: the Backpack calendar site, Ta-da, 30 boxes, and Stikket where I liked the idea of gathering of information . I also looked at stickies.

You can imagine that I spent way more time on this than I should have. I would like to see whether I can use the calendar site at school in the media center. Otherwise, I am unsure that I personally would use them, other than I did like the Pageflakes feature and could see using that.

As you can see, I visited the countdown site. It doesn't seem to be working, I closed out and tried several times, so...if time I will try again. It seemed very easy, so I don't know what was wrong.

This was interesting to see. I didn't know about these sites. I am unsure whether they are something that I would use. I read several papers on the internet, but I am not sure that I would want to choose to read articles based on popularity. I do think that this would be of interest to many people. I don't have the time.

After viewing 3 of these, I created an account on the Washington Post and shared it on Reddit. I tried to go to the Star Trib, since I read that online each day, but it didn't seem to have a sharing area. I will have to look again.

I see that I need to edit the above. I did find in going back where you can share on the StarTrib site. It was very plainly at the beginning of the article, I was looking at the end. They did seem to have a limited number to share with though.

Also, I see that my sharing hasn't taken effect. They say I am trying to share too fast and need to wait 10 min. before trying again. Hopefully it will work.

I think that Del.icio.us is a great thing! To be able to bookmark sites and be able to call them up wherever you are is a great tool, and can be used in many ways. At first I thought that it would have no value for me...and maybe it won't since my bookmarked sites at school are saved on the network so I can bring them up at any computer I am at. Also, I usually import them to a jump drive and take them home to install on my home computer. So in a way, I have bypassed all of that. Yet, this is a good tool for those who don't have the notworked access, or move from place to place.

I can see use for tagging. I don't believe that I will spend the sort of time on the internet that would make that worth while.

I edited the 23 Things on a Stick wiki. I changed the title by using color and a different font, as well as changing the size. I also added a paragraph to an existing sentiment about someone's wish to have the 23 things grouped for certain librarians that it would pertain to more. My response was in italics and was followed with my initials.

I think that wikis are a great tool, and I loved the video clip showing a good use for them. I do caution my school to use wikipedia carefully since I know of people who have purposely changed statements so others couldn't get information (this pertained to a trivia contest---and not wanting others to get the information as quickly as they found it).

I also noticed that one of the wikis I looked at for this assignment stated that there had been too much vandalism on their wiki so now one must log in to edit it. That is unfortunate.

Both of the tools are good for collaborating with others over the internet. Neither was difficult to use after I finally was able to get onto them. As with anything else, once one becomes used to how it works it is comfortable to use. Most of us are used to using Word and sending things as attachments, but these tools are certainly able to replace them.

The wealth of materials, as well as information on the internet is truly mind-boggling. I really don't think that most people have any idea of what is all available. Truly, those who are spending an inordinate time on the internet are the only ones that know many of these tools exist, and probably even then it is just a small part of what is available. Even though so much of this is very neat...I think there is so much more to do with my time and energy than to keep up on all of this.

Absolutely are there uses for all of these things, and it is surely opening my eyes! Lately, I hear more and more about the web slowing down, or just this morning a techy guy was talking on the radio about the latest virus that at least as of yet doesn't have a protection device. Makes me wonder if we truly are going to have an internet "crash" or at least a big slowdown. With all of the shopping, information, picture sharing etc. that is going on, I think it is likely.

Younger people have easy access to so much.

Finally, an area that I am very used to using! E-mailing is a major source of communication for me with friends and family. I do some IMing. I use it more in getting assistance over the internet than as a means of communication with friends and family. I have used text messaging at times but not often. I have also "attended" webinars, etc. which is a great way to get information when it isn't available in person.

Working in a public school we have too many measures in place and students aren't even allowed to use e-mail. I think that with all there is to offer these days, that is going to need to change.

This was a fun one! And as usual I spent too much time playing. I am getting nervous that I won't get through all of the assignments since I always end up doing too much at each one.

For some reason, the trading card I kept trying to create would not work. It was a picture of me reading to a class. Yet, when I downloaded one of my husband while golfing there was no problem.

I had fun looking at some of the different tools here, but obviously my name came out wrong! And yes, you can spend too much time playing with these different items as I did.

I can see where these tools could come in quite handy for posters, etc. in the library.

#4 --Flickr

It was fun playing with Flickr. I absolutely can't post the picture I downloaded to Flickr to my blog. I have added a picture from my computer, but haven't had luck adding the Flickr picture to my blog! Darn... I can see where people would like Flickr, particularly those who like to share with others on the web. Other than family or friends, I don't think I would like to have strangers looking and being able to tag my photos. I have used Picasa for several years and like it as a photo organizer.

I will spend more time with Flickr later.

I must be a slow learner...but finally I have added some feeds and looked at quite a few options. One good thing is it got me looking at other CMLE blogs and that was very interesting.

I am unsure that I would use this tool, or how it would be beneficial in my elementary library. Or how I could entice my techno-phobic staff to use it! (Just sort of kidding). I can see that it would be great for those who read blogs. I bookmark my favorites and generally use those. Or search for items of interest when needed.

I am glad I know about the tool and am excited to keep learning!
